Burnt Review

Source: filmandtvnow.com

Despite the fact that it came out just last year, I had never heard of this movie until my friend suggested we watch it. Honestly, I was pretty skeptical. The trailer only looked somewhat interesting, but my friend wanted to watch it so we did. (I mean, Bradley Cooper is hot, so not much could go wrong.)

The movie ended up having more of a plot than the trailer led me to believe which was a plus. However, the plot was at times confusing and some aspects of the storyline didn’t seem to have much of a purpose. I also couldn’t pin down who the characters were: what was their motivation? In a way that made them more mysterious, but on the other hand it made them harder to relate to and therefore it made it harder to connect to and like the movie.

However, Burnt contains some beautiful film work. The gorgeously plated dishes of food had me drooling and wishing that I could create something that beautiful. I also liked watching a kind of “behind the scenes look” of the restaurant industry, even though it might not be all that accurate. I loved the fast pace, the creativity, and the desire for perfection. I wanted to be a part of it.

I would recommend this to all the food lovers out there. There’s enough of a plot to keep it interesting for those people, but not enough to make it worth your while if you’re not into food.

Finding Dory Review

Finding Dory is probably one of the best sequels I have ever seen. It continued off the old movie some (Marlin and Nemo were some of the main characters), but Dory was the character the story focused around (I mean what else would expect from the name Finding Dory?) and the movie was completely its own. The engaging storyline and wonderful characters made it well worth the $10 ticket (which I still haven’t paid my friend back for, whoops, sorry Gretch). Plus, who can resist those huge baby Dory eyes?

Also keep a lookout for my favorite new characters: Hank, Gerald, and Becky (from left to right)

The Grand Budapest Hotel

Version 2

The Grand Budapest Hotel is a wonderful movie. It’s about how the owner of this fictitious hotel came to eventually own it. This movie was beautifully shot, had a quirky little story line, and seemed kind of old timey in a way that wasn’t cheesy. I loved the humor in this movie. It wasn’t a slapstick comedy, but it had a some good lines and some quirky scenes that just made you want to smile. Gustave, one of the main characters, if my favorite. He’s so sassy and has a really good soul. Honestly, this is probably one of my favorite movies now and I would recommend it to anyone who loves a beautifully shot movie with a simple, but fun, story line.

Birdman Review

Version 2

When I saw this movie at my local library the other day, I immediately picked it up and checked it out. This film won Best Picture at the Academy Awards and has won and been nominated for numerous other awards. I wanted to see what all the fuss was about! Basically, the movie is about a washed up actor, Riggan, who used to play a superhero back in the day, but is now trying to get his own Broadway show off the ground. Throughout the film, Riggan struggles to stay relevant and come to terms with his importance in the world. I liked this movie. I really did. I don’t think I fully understood it, but I enjoyed it. The cinematography was absolutely amazing and I love how the camera followed the actors down all these twisting hallways. The only way I can explain this movie is that it felt like a piece of art. A lot of movies I watch these days feel like they are created for purely entertainment purposes, but Birdman felt different. It felt like it was worth something. It is definitely one I would recommend watching if you haven’t already seen it.

The Duff Review

This movie was absolutely hilarious. You know those movies where everything funny about the movie is shown in the trailer? Well this was not that. I honestly was laughing my head off the whole movie. It wasn’t just a stupid comedy movie either. It had a nice message about embracing who you are and touched on the idea that people can’t hurt you if you don’t let what they say affect you. It was just a really great movie and I think you should go watch it right now.

21 Jump Street Review

I loved this movie. It was hilarious. There was nothing particularly deep about it and there was a lot of swearing (which I know some people don’t like), but I enjoyed watching it. I think it’s a perfect movie for summer because it’s just fun and doesn’t make you think too much. Not that I don’t like when movies make you think, but variety is good. I’ll be sure to watch 22 Jump Street soon.

Maleficent Movie Review

I LOVED the plotline of this movie. I loved the story and how Maleficent was developed as a character. However, the acting in this movie wasn’t all that great. Angelina Jolie was amazing, of course, but everyone else? Ehhhhhh… I wasn’t all that impressed with the action scenes either and the graphics could have been a tad bit better (if you’re going to make a movie, you better hold it up to Lord of the Rings standards). Basically, this movie felt like it was all about Angelina Jolie–which is fine because she’s awesome–but they could have spent a bit more money on it. Hey, but I don’t actually know anything about movies. I just like to criticize.

On a final note, if you haven’t seen Maleficent yet, you should go see it. Like I said, I loved the plotline and the plotline is one of, if not the, most important things about a movie, in my opinion. Also, Maleficent’s makeup is amazing. Watch her face the whole movie, take notes, and then create a tutorial of how to get the look. Or you could just link me to a good makeup tutorial. Either or.
